Emotional Healing And How It Can Benefit You

Did you know that negative emotions are at the root of many of your ailments? It is now scientifically proven that 95% (if not more) of all physical problems have emotional roots. We all know that tension can cause headaches, fear can cause breathing restrictions, nervousness can cause sweaty palms, etc. Thus, its important to resolve our emotional blockages.

Case in point: A woman came to see me this week complaining that she can’t fall asleep. She also mentioned she has some emotional issues of depression and anxiety that she is struggling with. I suggested she comes in for an emotional counseling session with me. When she came in, she revealed to me that she has fibromyalgia and feels pain throughout her body. Fibromyalgia, from an emotional perspective means the person has gone so far away from their true self that the body has totally shut down.

95% or more of disease is a result of deep unhealed emotional wounds, traumas and belief patterns. Many people are already familiar with the fact that emotional stress can lead to digestive issues, irritable bowel syndrome, tension and headaches, but many may not be aware that emotional stress can also cause other physical illnesses such as cardiovascular disease, severe chronic pain, fibromyalgia and even cancer.

Physical Pain Is A Warning Sign of Emotional Trauma
Physical pain is often a sign of unresolved trauma in the nervous system. For instance, feelings of insecurity get lodged in the heart and make our breath out of synch. It activates the sympathetic nervous system as if we were dealing with a threat (elevated heart rate and blood pressure), and can create a sense of unease in the chest, and even pain.

People who have been hurt by others often have retracted chests and downcast postures, which are muscular ways of protecting the heart and closing off the self from fully engaging with others for fear of being hurt again. And people in insecure relationships are more likely to have cardiovascular (and other health) problems than those who are more secure.

Stress is one major factor that can produce significant amounts of chaos at this underlying emotional level, which is likely why removing stress has such a positive influence on health.

The classic definition of stress is “any real or imagined threat, and your body’s response to it.” Research has shown that your body’s natural stress response can have a significant impact on everything from immune function and brain chemistry, to blood sugar levels, hormonal balance, and much more.

Negative emotions result in immune depression and even accelerate the aging process. Even worse, negative emotions often result in the formation of “trapped emotions,” or emotional energies that are left behind after an emotionally-charged event. These trapped emotions are the single biggest underlying common denominator for all the illnesses that we suffer from, whether emotional, mental or physical.

If an emotion isn’t expressed (outward movement), it is suppressed (inward movement) and get lodged in the tissues of the person. The result of controlling or stifling emotional energy is frustration, anger, depression, physical pain, control issues, emotional ‘shut-down’, or self-sabotage. Self-judgment, low self-esteem and unworthiness begin to develop. Chronic pain in the form of arthritis, bursitis, joint pain, or back pain sets in.

Powerful emotions such as pain, fear, grief, disappointment, panic, anxiety, anger, and longing, shock your body like an electrical charge, causing lesions along your neural pathways.  This disrupts your body’s natural energy flow.

According to Dr David Suzuki, condensed molecules from breath exhaled from verbal expressions of anger, hatred, and jealousy, contain toxins.  Accumulated over 1 hr, these toxins are enough to kill 80 guinea pigs!  Anger damages the liver and gall bladder.  Anger toward another person is like taking poison and expecting someone else to die!

It doesn’t help to hold back or deny your emotions.  The very nature of energy is movement.  When you repress or control your feelings, their energy can’t flow outward properly and dissipate naturally.  You may think you have controlled how you felt, but the energy of it is still at work in your body

Suppressing emotions uses up a lot of energy, which robs your body of energy that should be used for vital functions.  Negative emotions tax your spleen, liver and adrenal glands and use up nutrients the body needs to sustain itself.  The result is fatigue, auto-immune disorders, and lowered vitality.

Energy has to move.  If an emotion isn’t expressed (outward movement), it is suppressed (inward movement).

An imbalance between your rational mind and your emotions will cause digestive upset, constipation, diarrhea or digestive disorders.  That’s because your mental ‘digestion’ or assimilation process is mirrored by your body’s physical assimilation process

Resentment and bitterness are like acid.  They cause inflammation and pain.  Stubborn, inflexible resentment goes to the knees, shoulders, and joints–the parts of your body that are designed to be open and flexible

Arthritis is bottled-up hurt.

Cancer is a deep secret, hatred, guilt, or grief ‘eating away’ at you

Breast and uterine cancer reveals a lack of nurturing or self-nurturing in your life, or an inability to nurture others

Back pain reveals feeling a lack of support.  Lumbar back pain points to lack of financial support.  Thoracic back pain shows no emotional support or love.  Middle back pain is carrying the weight of the past and also reflects feeling unsupported and overwhelmed by responsibility.

The emotions associated with living in a “state of emergency” all the time—which is what happens when you’re chronically stressed—are anger, aggression, hatred, fear, prejudice, anxiety, insecurity, hopelessness, and other negative states that feed the energetic chaos that manifests as physical pain and disease. Healing Your Emotions Heals Your Physical Ailments
Dr. Brad Nelson says, “I don’t believe there is any such thing as an incurable disease. When a medical doctor tells the patient that what they have is “incurable,” what he is really saying is they have cannot be cured with drugs or surgery, since those are really the doctors only options.

The reality is that symptoms are the body’s way of saying that something is wrong. He continues, “The holistic approach is to figure out what the underlying imbalances are that are behind those symptoms. If you fix those underlying imbalances, the symptoms will go away.”
